In order to maintain their leverage in negotiating royalty charges, leading Taiwan manufacturers of optical discs and optical disc drives (ODDs) are remaining neutral in the battle for next-generation blue-laser DVD standards, and specifically the battle between Blu-ray Disc and HD-DVD, according to Taiwan industry makers.

Sony have announced the sampling of key components for Blu-ray Disc (BD) drives. Beginning early part of December this year, samples of the key components for BD player/recorders, including optical heads and optical related semiconductor devices will be available, thus offering opportunities for manufactures to develop BD related products, as well as supporting to expand the overall BD market.
